Just changed the proc scheduling to prioritize background services, and also the device manager USB power management options were still contradicting the power savings settings to allow turning off the device so I just turned all those off for every USB device. Some of the tweaks on that Focusrite page I hadn't tried yet. Just to confirm, you're powering the UMC204 over USB also? And do you have it connected directly to your computer or is it on an independently-powered USB hub? (I'm already using my Focusrite on a powered USB hub as suggested by some other threads but makes no difference with the BSOD issue.) The UMC204 and the SSL 2 mentioned by another commenter on this thread both look good. I guess I'll start shopping for alternatives anyway assuming that the hard drive tweak won't make much of a difference. A few times in the past I think it happened after it had already been up and running for a while, but almost always from a cold boot. In my case though I usually get the BSOD when starting up my desktop from being fully shut down, and it happens within 2-3 mins of booting up. The only setting I don't already have set to "never turn off" is the hard drive which I already had set to 380 minutes but I guess I'll bump it up to 999 for the hell of it. I actually already have all the power saving options disabled, no sleeping and no USB suspend and it's set to "high performance" mode unless I'm missing something obvious.
